Zahra

The Desert's Bloom

Morocco

I am Zahra!

I come from a small town in northern Morocco. My daily life was clearly structured. Prayer, family, fixed routines. As a girl, you learn early on what matters. Respect, modesty, reliability. Faith is part of everything, not just certain moments. Many things are not questioned, but adopted and continued.

After I got married, I came to Germany, to the Black Forest, to my husband. It was a new beginning in an environment I didn't know. The peace here, the distance between people, the way of life. Many things were different from home. I had to learn to find my way around everyday life, to make decisions independently, and at the same time to preserve what had shaped me.

Today I live between these two orders. My faith has remained. I pray, I adhere to what is important to me, and I consciously express it outwardly. At the same time, I move in a world that is more open and has different expectations. As a woman, this means constantly weighing things up. How much you adopt and where you stay true to yourself. It's not a break, but a balance that is created anew every day.

The image combines Moroccan tradition with elements of the Black Forest through precisely crafted details. The ornamental patterns of the fabric pick up on typical North African textiles and stand for origin, craftsmanship, and cultural identity. The way the fabric frames the face refers to modesty and protection in public spaces. The red "Bollen" (pom-poms) create a clear contrast and quote a central element of the Black Forest traditional costume. The combination creates a visual tension between ornamental density and reduced form, which makes the inner conflict of the figure visible.
