Meilin

The Guardian of Time

China

I am Meilin!

I come from Zhejiang Province, from a small city in China. My father was a watchmaker. His workshop smelled of wood, oil, and metal. As a child, I often stood beside him and watched. His work was quiet, precise, unhurried. From him, I learned the importance of patience. Small parts, clear processes, no mistakes.

I came to Germany for my studies. It was only planned for a few years. After graduation, I found a job in the Black Forest and stayed. Many things here are different, but some are familiar. The precision, the calm, the focus on details. I work a lot and am often by myself. That suits me.

In my free time, I sometimes go to the Cuckoo Clock Museum. The mechanics, the movements, the interplay of the parts remind me of my father's workshop. It's not the same, but it brings me closer to what I know.

The image brings together two craft traditions through their details. The floral embroideries of the blouse pick up classic Chinese motifs and stand for origin, order, and artisanal precision. The red color scheme in the hair and along the seams refers to discipline, energy, and cultural identity. In contrast, the Black Forest cuckoo clock with its carved ornaments, the dial, and the architectural form represents timekeeping, constancy, and European craft history. The juxtaposition reveals how similar both traditions are at their core. They show the same care, the same calmness, and the same high standard for every single detail.
