Dhara
Life Between Two Worlds
India
I am Dhara!
I was born in the Black Forest. My parents came here from India many years ago. My father for work, my mother followed him. They built a life for themselves, but never abandoned many aspects of their heritage. At home, different rules applied than outside. We cooked Indian food, celebrated festivals, observed rituals. Respect for elders, fixed routines, clear expectations. India was always present, although I myself had never been there.
At school, it wasn't easy. While other children were free, I often had to explain why I couldn't go everywhere with them. Birthdays, sleepovers, spontaneous gatherings. Many things were not allowed for us. I learned early on to have two sides. One for outside, one for home. Making friends was possible, but never entirely natural.
Today, I still live here, between half-timbered houses, forests, and clear structures. My parents wish for me to marry a man with a similar background. For them, it's part of it. Not for me. I want to decide for myself how I live. This question accompanies me every day. Between what is expected and what I want for myself.

The image combines Indian tradition with elements of the Black Forest through finely tuned details. The jewelry, the bindi, and the mehndi patterns represent cultural affiliation, spirituality, and ceremony. The folded draping of the fabric refers to classic Indian clothing, while the red pom-poms pick up a striking element of the Black Forest traditional costume. The floral patterns and warm colors create a visual connection between both cultures. The details show a figure deeply rooted in her tradition and at the same time questioning it.
